The Spaces Where Northwest Georgia Gathers Together
Every region needs places that belong to everyone, spaces where no ticket is required and no one is turned away at the door. Across Cartersville, Dalton, and Calhoun, three very different organizations have built these spaces, one around fresh food, one around live music, and one around the stage itself. None of them started with much of a budget, yet all three grew because a community decided they were worth investing in.
In Cartersville, that story began with a belief that a community deserves access to the food grown in its own backyard. The Cartersville Farmers Market operates as far more than a weekly outdoor shopping destination. It is a direct-to-consumer marketplace where small farms and food producers can build sustainable businesses, where food dollars stay within the local economy, and where neighbors gather around a shared commitment to fresh, locally grown food.
Through SNAP/EBT acceptance and produce incentive programs, the market works to make sure healthy food is a resource available to the whole community, not a privilege reserved for a few.
When the market began its revitalization in 2019, it had virtually no operating budget, and the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia was among the first to step forward with seed funding at the moment it mattered most, funding that helped bring in a weekly local musician and establish the welcoming atmosphere regulars now return to week after week.

That same idea, that live music and shared gathering space belong to everyone, animates the Dalton-Whitfield Community Band, which has offered free, open-to-the-public concerts since its founding in the fall of 2012. Each year the Band presents five concerts alongside performances at civic events like the Dalton State College commencement and Veterans Day observances.
This year, with sponsorship from the Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia, the Band launched its America 250 Concert Series, bringing patriotic, community-centered programming to audiences at the City of Cohutta Independence Celebration, the Chatsworth and Dalton Memorial Day Concerts, and the Tunnel Hill Independence Celebration, carrying the Band beyond its traditional stages and into new communities throughout the region. The Foundation's involvement has gone beyond funding as well, with staff showing up in person as guest announcers, a hands-on investment in what the Band is building.
In Calhoun, the Gem Theatre has lived through its own test to keep its doors open. The Theatre exists to bring affordable entertainment and educational opportunities to Northwest Georgia, and in recent years has offered free movies to the public, hosting 53 free screenings last year alone.
The Community Foundation of Northwest Georgia stepped in with support during the Gem's most financially desperate moment, when the COVID-19 pandemic emptied its revenue and audiences were slow to return. Around that same period, the Theatre received an adjacent building in serious disrepair, and Foundation grants made it possible to stabilize its structure and roof, halting years of accumulated damage. The Gem now looks toward turning that space into a Center for Arts named for Pearl King, whose family's vision renovated the Theatre itself back in 2011. Learn more about the Gem Theater here.
A farmers market, a community band, and a small-town theater are solving the same problem in three different ways: how does a community make sure the things that bring people together remain open to all who want to gather and enjoy loving where they live? In each case, the answer has depended on people willing to invest early, stay involved, and trust that a gathering space is worth protecting long after the ribbon has been cut.
The next time a Saturday morning trip to the market turns into a conversation with the farmer who grew your tomatoes, or a free concert in the park fills an evening with music, or a Friday night movie brings a family through the Gem's doors at no cost at all, that is the work of community, and the Community Foundation is proud to support quality of life initiatives that gather people and help them love where they live.
